Android Developer (Native)
Build native Android apps that put our maps and spatial tools in people's hands — Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, and real offline capability.
About Afterrealism
Afterrealism is a small geospatial software consultancy in Canberra. We build maps, data platforms, and cloud systems for organisations across Australia to a standard set inside Geoscience Australia and CSIRO.
Small is the point: you work directly with the founder, your decisions ship, and you can see exactly where your work lands.
About the role
You'll own the Android side of our mobile practice: building native apps that bring our geospatial platforms to phones and tablets in the field.
Field crews, rangers, and inspectors need maps that work with no signal, sync when they're back, and don't drain the battery by lunch. You'll build apps that respect those constraints.
What you'll do
- Design, build, and ship native Android apps in Kotlin
- Build offline-first map experiences with local tile caches and spatial databases
- Implement background sync, geofencing, and location services
- Work with our web team on shared APIs and data contracts
- Publish to and maintain apps on the Google Play Store
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of native Android development (Kotlin)
- Jetpack Compose and modern Android architecture (MVVM, Hilt, coroutines/Flow)
- Experience with offline data storage (Room, SQLDelight, or similar)
- Location and mapping SDK experience (Google Maps, MapLibre, or OSM)
- Published apps you can point to
Nice to have
- Geospatial or field-data collection app experience
- Background services, WorkManager, and battery-aware design
- CI/CD for Android (Fastlane, GitHub Actions)
- Cross-platform awareness (Kotlin Multiplatform, Compose Multiplatform)
