Afterrealism is a small geospatial software consultancy in Canberra. We build maps, data platforms, and cloud systems for organisations across Australia to a standard set inside Geoscience Australia and CSIRO.

About the role
You'll build the server side of our geospatial platforms: APIs, data pipelines, and the spatial services that our web and mobile apps depend on.
Our stack is Python-first — FastAPI, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GDAL, and cloud-native deployment. You'll design systems that handle large spatial datasets efficiently and deploy them to Cloudflare and AWS.
What you'll do
- Design and build REST and GraphQL APIs in FastAPI or Django
- Build ETL pipelines for large geospatial datasets (GDAL, rasterio, shapely)
- Model and query spatial data in PostGIS
- Design async task queues, caching layers, and background jobs
- Deploy and operate services on cloud infrastructure
What we're looking for
- 3+ years of Python backend development
- FastAPI, Django, or Flask experience
- PostgreSQL and PostGIS fundamentals
- Async programming (asyncio, aiohttp, or similar)
- Docker and cloud deployment experience
Nice to have
- Geospatial Python libraries (GDAL, rasterio, shapely, geopandas)
- Serverless / edge platforms (Cloudflare Workers, Lambda)
- Message queues (Redis, RabbitMQ, SQS)
- Open-source contributions
